At Dronebotics, we developed our own drone payload Darcap 25. However, what is a drone payload? In this blog we will break down the concept of drone payloads, and dive deeper into drone payload integration and carrying capacity.

What is a drone payload?

According to EASA Cover Regulation to Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945, Chapter 1, Article 3 – Definitions, a drone payload:

“means any instrument, mechanism, equipment, part, apparatus, appurtenance, or accessory, including communications equipment, that is installed in or attached to the aircraft, and is not used or intended to be used in operating or controlling an aircraft in flight, and is not part of an airframe, engine, or propeller.”

So, simplified it says that a payload is any device or accessory added to an aircraft that is not used for flying or controlling it, and is not part of the main structure, engine, or propeller.

A payload can be a solid part of the drone, like a gimbal camera. Also external devices like a camera, spotlight or megaphone designed to be an optional add-on for a drone, are payloads. Most drones are capable of supporting one to three types of payloads, allowing for flexibility in their functionality.

Drone payload attachment

How can an external payload be attached to a drone? We at Dronebotics are experienced with the external DJI drone payload.
An external DJI drone payload can be attached via a rail that can be easily screwed onto the drone. This allows the payload to securely click into place. For the payload to fit properly, it must be compatible with the rail. The rail, in turn, must be able to be screwed on the drone correctly.

How much payload can a drone carry?

How much payload a drone can carry, depends on a few factors. An important one is the motor of the drone: how powerful is it, how much thrust can it generate?
There are online tools available, such as a drone payload calculator, that can help you determine the maximum weight of your custom-made payload.
When you buy a drone payload, of course this calculation is done for you. Our drone payload, the Darcap 25, is lightweight. It weighs less than 270 grams (9.52 oz), to minimize its impact on the drone.
